Impact on the world

As medical director, principal financier alongside Merrick during the company's precarious first years, and eventual second president, Moore was instrumental in building North Carolina Mutual into the company often credited with making Durham 'The Black Wall Street of America.'

Life & background

A physician who served as North Carolina Mutual's medical director, Moore was one of only three remaining investors, alongside John Merrick and Moore's own nephew Charles C. Spaulding, after most other backers withdrew during the company's difficult first year. Moore personally financed the struggling company alongside Merrick until it became self-sustaining, and became its second president after Merrick's death in 1919, leading the company until his own death in 1923.
