About

The Manual.

The Manual is a working reference of Black inventors, scientists, educators, entertainers, athletes, and pioneers: the people whose ideas and labor shaped the modern world, and whose names are too often left out of the record.

It currently holds 1,027 sourced entries across 19 disciplines. Every entry includes the person's contribution, the impact it had on the world, a short biography, and the independent sources used to verify it.

The illustrations on entry pages are AI-generated interpretations, not photographs, to help the archive feel like a book you can walk through. Where photographs and verified portraits exist, those will replace them over time.

This is version one. Corrections and additions are welcome. The goal is a reference that is accurate, generous, and used.
