Life & background

An 11-time All-Star, Leonard spent his entire 14-season career with the Homestead Grays, batting cleanup behind Josh Gibson and helping the team capture championships in 1943, 1944, and 1948. A two-time Negro National League batting champion, his career numbers rank eighth all-time in batting average and seventh in OPS once Negro Leagues statistics were formally integrated into MLB's official records in 2024. Offered a spot in the major leagues in 1952 at age 45, he declined, saying he knew he was past his prime. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
