She graduated summa cum laude from Smith College in 1945, completed her PhD on Laguerre series in the complex domain at Yale under functional analysis expert Einar Hille in 1949, and briefly taught at New York University before joining the faculty of Fisk University in 1950, a historically Black college where two of her own students, Vivienne Malone-Mayes and Etta Zuber Falconer, went on to earn their own mathematics doctorates. Frustrated by the limitations segregation placed on Black academic institutions, she left Fisk in 1952 for a position analyzing missile designs at the National Bureau of Standards, where she began considering how newly developed computing technology might apply to scientific problems, then joined IBM in 1956, writing software for the company's NASA contracts at the Vanguard Computing Center; she later recalled the genuine excitement of writing real-time orbital calculations for a satellite the size of a grapefruit at the very dawn of America's space program. After marrying and relocating to Los Angeles in 1960, she worked for North American Aviation on Project Apollo's spacecraft design through 1967, later returning to teaching at California State University, Los Angeles and Texas College; she died in June 2023 at age 99, having spent decades unaware that her own doctoral milestone made her one of the earliest Black women mathematicians in American history, a fact she said her own sister had to tell her about.
